Course transformation and teacher training
Educators || Universities || Grammar Schools || Language teachers
You are a respected authority in your field and taught in your native tongue for years. Of late, foreign students have become a significant presence on your campus, and you would like access to them. The transition to teaching in English is more than a translation exercise. We can support you in: teaching in English; inductive teaching; teaching international classes; and teaching collaboratively. Similarly, we can enhance your language teachers' skills from teaching English as a foreign or second language (EFL/ESL) to teaching English for academic purposes (EAP). We can combine any of the above to suit your needs.
Compelling professional and academic English
Governments || Administrative staff || Companies || Consultancies
Written, spoken, formal, informal, exact, approximate – these are just some of the variants that make for effective professional or academic English. We get into the nuts and bolts of your English in dealing with your international clients and customers, preparing your articles for publication, making your presentations engaging, and more. We go beyond the rules, where your English shows life and richness as in your own language. I show you how to navigate between strict conventions and informal seriousness, and how to achieve nuance and aesthetic balance without compromising the effectiveness of your communication.
Conversation, voice and small talk
Politicians || Public officials || Lawyers || Hosts || Journalists || Spokespersons
You deliver a fantastic paper. Many international colleagues queue up for your card. You are rightly pleased with your success. Your new admirers promise to chat to you at dinner. Do you look forward to it, or are you filled with trepidation? You cannot let them down. More importantly, you cannot let yourself down. I show you that ease with conversation, small talk and networking are not about how well you speak, but about how well you listen. It is not about how much you know, but about how much you want to know. Conversation, small talk and networking are emotional interactions. I support you to become comfortable in this.
Internationalisation consultancy
University leaders and planners || Staff Trainers || Research institutes
Raising your institution's international profile might need action on several interrelated levels: the atmosphere on campus, the make-up of your teaching, research and administrative staff, your student body, your interface with the wider public, your medium of instruction, the events you host, etc. How well does your institution attract and, more importantly, retain international staff and students? How far into your institution does your international collaboration reach? We can help you analyse the gaps you might need to fill, and identify possible issues that might need to be addressed. I can work with you in devising an internationalisation plan.
Refining/Polishing English translations
Lawyers || Researchers || E-commerce || Diplomatic services || Educators || Medical services || Financial services || Tourism and Hospitality || Industry
Translation technology has made significant inroads into translating. These technologies are good, can be grammatically accurate and suffice for many purposes. Where greater subtlety of expression is required, or extra care needs to be taken with accuracy, nothing beats the native speaker with decades of experience using and teaching the language at the highest levels, and refining translations. Included in this service is working very closely with you to understand exactly what you intend to convey, and what effect you want your translation to have on your audience or readers.
Developmental and copy editing, proof reading
Scholars || Writers || Journalists || Publishers || Reviewers || Editors
Regardless of genre, subject, or purpose, your writing has to feel right without the reader necessarily realising why it does. At a minimum, the text must be coherent, flow clearly, be easy to navigate and avoid taxing the reader. But why stop there? Your work can also be eloquent, well-structured, and aesthetically well-composed. Just because a word has the correct meaning, does not make it the best word. Grammatical perfection alone does not necessarily bring your idea across in the best possible way. Together, we make your article, chapter or book compelling at the word, sentence, paragraph and manuscript levels.
About Me
English is my mother tongue. I have studied in it, taught in it and written in it. Many years and several countries later, I make my living from making the English language work for you. Whether you've returned home after a rewarding stint in an Anglophone country and you want to make sure that you keep your English alive, or you want to build on the gains you have made, or you just want to relive that feeling of enjoying English again, we'll figure out how to put the English language at your service, and then put it to work.
I am a UK national qualified specifically to teach in higher education, and also to teach English for Academic Purposes, English for Adults, and several subjects in university, based on five degrees from institutions in three countries. From academic colleagues to professionals to doctoral and habilitation candidates, from developmental editing to proofreading, from relaxed conversations to structured presentations, I want to surprise you with more than you expected.
